Butte College Unveils Two New Murals

New works focus on themes of inclusion and diversity.

Artist Christian Garcia stands in front of the mural at the Chico CenterWhen Butte College students fully return to campus for instruction they will be greeted by new art at the college’s Chico and Glenn County Centers. The two murals, which were commissioned by Butte College Associated Students and brought to life by local artist Christian Garcia, focus on themes of inclusion and diversity through images that represent positivity, hope, faith and progress.

Garcia, a local Chico artist and Butte College alumnus drew the attention of the Associated Students board for his work in the community and was selected to complete the murals. Garcia is a self-taught artist and muralist heavily influenced by graffiti and street art. He blends urban elements, graffiti techniques, graphic design, and fine art to create a style that is vibrant and eclectic. While the two works share similar themes and are meant to be extensions of each other, Garcia worked to make sure that they reflected the individual communities and students served by the centers they are housed in.

“I wanted to think of where each mural was going to live. To whom it would speak to and the diverse individuals who would enjoy it daily,” he said.

Garcia was honored to help enrich the student and faculty environment of his alma mater. “My goal was to create something beautiful, vibrant, and aesthetically pleasing for everyone to enjoy,” said Garcia.

“Art enlivens us and we all need that right now,” said Kelly Munson, Butte College Associated Students advisor.

The Associated Students plans to work with additional local artists to create a series of murals on the main campus in Oroville.
